My copy of Photoshop was getting long in the tooth so I thought it was time to update it. There are plenty of choices for software to work with digital images on the market - which one to buy?

First off, the latest version of Photoshop (CS4), That would be a good choice but at ?559.99 for the full version, completely out of the question. I obviously couldn’t fudge the issue and try for a student edition at ?149.20 either.

Eventually, having considered Serif’s PhotoPlus, Adobe Lightroom, and Corel’s Paint Shop Pro, I decided that it would have to be Photoshop Elements. For one thing I could get RAW converters for all my Canon cameras from Adobe’s website which will make shooting in RAW rather that JPEG more viable.

Which version to choose; all the reviews I read suggested that there was little difference between versions 7 and 8, well none worth paying the extra for. So I ordered a second hand copy of V7 which came with its own unique serial number and installed without problems on my desktop.

Then came the acid test; how would it perform? The menus are very similar to those in the copy of Photoshop CS that I was familiar with so no problems there. Elements has most of the features that I use for editing my photos – so far so good. What it does lack though is the ability to produce and work with masks. Neither can you work on the individual channels of an image (RGB) nor apply effects to layers.

To be fair, working with masks and on channels are kind of high end features which you would not expect on a consumer product. In any case, I still have Photoshop CS installed which I can use when I need to do something a bit different.

For 95% of the work I do on my photographs, Adobe Photoshop Elements will do just fine.

So here is my first D3X photo. First thing I noticed this evening is that neither Adobe Lightroom 2 or Photoshop CS4 support the D3X's new RAW NEF format. Poor show Nikon, the new Canon 5D Mark III is not due on the market until January and already Canon have worked with Adobe to update their RAW support. I had to do a bit of TIF trickery to get this NEF file edited to the cool blue you see above. Nikon continues to push their Capture NX2 software at the detriment of their loyal customer base. About a year ago Microsoft was fined hundreds of millions by the EU for anti competitive behaviour similar to this. I just spent a large amount of my salary on a camera whose manufacturer is railroading me into purchasing their bespoke image editing software. Nikon beware; your customers sell your products.
